He talks about the 4% rule which is to only spend the interest/ dividends off their investments never actually spending down the assets.  If you don’t spend the assets, they continue to grow to a point they then can’t spend it down because of health problems or restrictions. His point is, many years, you can spend more than 4% if you have the right asset allocation allowing more money for experiences.
  • The Time Value of Life: Understand the importance of spending your money when it has the most impact, rather than deferring gratification indefinitely. I found this the most interesting for me. Bill Perkins talks about creating a bucket list of all the things you want to do in your lifetime. The key is then matching up in what decades of your life you can do those things. For example, if you really want to hike up Machu Pichu in Peru, you probably want to plan to do that before you are 80. This was something I had never thought of before. When you think about your bucket list activities by decade, you realize how much you need to fit in in your 50s and 60s.
  • Memory Dividends: Learn how investing in experiences pays off in the form of cherished memories that continue to bring happiness long after the moment has passed. Spend your money on your kids when everyone is healthy. Enjoy the money together on a trip or an adventure or help them achieve a dream when you can see it happen. Don’t leave the money to them when you die.  Make the memories with the money together.
